Born in Belgium, Jozef De Veuster followed his three siblings and entered religious life, taking the name Damien. When his brother fell ill, he volunteered to replace him as missionary to Hawaii. For nine years he served the people there before choosing to minister to the outcast lepers on the Kalaupapa Peninsula.
After sixteen years of joyful self-sacrifice in the colony and succumbing slowly to leprosy himself, he died among the people he loved.
