Born in Greece to wealthy Christian parents, Nicholas was orphaned as a child when they died during a plague.

From an early age, he used his inheritance to aid the poor, giving rise to the tradition of giving gifts on his feast day.

After becoming a bishop, he suffered both prison and torture for his faith. He fought valiantly against heresies and paganism, eventually dying peacefully in his own diocese at Myra.
