Born in New York to wealthy Episcopalian parents, Elizabeth’s early life was quiet, simple, and often lonely.
After marrying William Seton and bearing five children, she wrote that she felt overwhelmed with joy. However, poverty and sickness soon befell the young couple.
Wiliam’s health failed him and after a trip to Italy in hopes of a recovery, he died. Elizabeth’s heart was broken and she turned to the Catholic Church for consolation.
When she returned to America, she began the first free Catholic school. She faced many difficulties and persecutions but continued to teach even when dying of tuberculosis.
