Born into a family of poor farmers, little John lost his father at the age of two. From an early age, he wanted to help the boys of Turin live more devoutly.

After his ordination, he established a group known as the Oratory of St. Francis de Sales, which helped provide religious instruction, lodging, education, and work opportunities to young men and boys in need. Saint John Bosco died in the early hours of Jan. 31, 1888, after saying: “Tell the boys that I shall be waiting for them all in Paradise.”
